Overview
Les Miserables musical was based on an 1862 novel of the same name by Victor Hugo, and the first French Les Miserables musical was composed by French musical theatre composer, Claude-Michel Schönberg in 1980 while an English version was presented in London, England on 1985. The musical arrived at Broadway in 1987 and its one of the longest running musicals both at London and at Broadway where it has been running for over 25 years.
Story
Les Miserables musical story is in the context of 19th-century France where French people from all the backgrounds fought for redemption and revolution. The musical story starts with the release of Jean Valjean on parole by policeman Javert after staying nineteen years behind the bars in an attempt to steal bread loaf for his starving sister and mother. On his return no one is willing to accept him for his conviction and various escape attempts from jail but the only kind person to him was Bishop of Digne who advised him to break parole and changed his identity to Monsieur Madeleine.
Then we see how in eight years new Monsieur becomes a rich businessman and Mayor of the city. Les Miserables story also tells how that time community used to behave towards Fantine, a Valjean’s factory worker having an illegitimate child and was badly treated and finally becomes a whore.
Les Miserables story continues with people struggling for their freedom and how they die for the cause.
Main Cast
Les Miserables star cast is huge and various roles have been played by various artists. The original London cast of the musical features Colm Wilkinson as Jean and Roger Allam as Javert. Les Miserables had great cast for its 25th Anniversary production and Alfie Boe who portrayed Valjean in 25th Anniversary will resume the same role at Queen's Theatre on 23 June 2011.
